ST. GEORGE, Utah, Nov. 11, 2024 —
In a heartfelt tribute to those who have served our country, the surgeons at Southwest Oral Surgical Arts, or SWOSA, announced the selection of Michelle Salazar, who served in the Army, as first winner of their annual “Stars, Stripes and Smiles” smile restoration giveaway.
Starting in 2010, Salazar served as a mechanic and truck driver for the Army and was stationed in various places, including Colorado and Salt Lake City. She was honorably discharged from service in 2014. Salazar lost several of her teeth due to a landscaping accident, where a rock flew up and hit her in the mouth. Salazar was nominated by several friends and family, who shared her story and what a profound impact improved dental health would have for her.
“Michelle has always been the first to step up for anyone in need, bringing a smile and support to those around her,” said Kim Snow, who was one of Salazar’s friends to nominate her. “I’ve literally seen her hand someone the coat off her back in a snowstorm. Another time, it was the shoes off her feet. She never questions it. It breaks my heart to see her struggling with her own smile when she’s done so much for others. This opportunity will truly be life-altering for her.”
Salazar, who was overwhelmed at the news she was selected, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the surgeons and staff at Southwest Oral Surgical Arts.
“At first, I was embarrassed to learn I was a finalist and almost didn’t go in,” she said. But I’m glad I did. The staff and doctor were amazing, and I am truly humbled and grateful for this opportunity. Dental health has always been a challenge for me, and this implant will not only improve my smile but also my confidence.”
This initiative, designed to honor someone who proudly served in a branch of the US armed services, aims to give back to the Veterans in our community each Veterans Day and recognize the sacrifices made by Veterans. The giveaway was open to Veterans in the community, and nominations poured in, showcasing the incredible stories of kindness and service.
“We were overwhelmed by how many submissions we received, which made it very difficult to pick one veteran, as all were deserving,” said Dr. Erik Nielsen, one of the oral surgeons at SWOSA. “Many Veterans face challenges that extend beyond the battlefield, including health issues that can impact their quality of life. It’s amazing the impact a fully restored and healthy smile can have on the overall well-being of someone, and we are honored to provide this service to Michelle, who really is such deserving Veteran.”
“Our team at Southwest Oral Surgical Arts is committed to serving the community and giving back, especially to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom,” said Jonathan Bacon, CEO of SWOSA. “The Stars, Stripes and Smiles, Veterans Day giveaway is a small way of giving thanks to the service these brave men and women do for our community and nation. At SWOSA, Veterans are always offered a 10 percent discount on all services.”
